The single most important factor in determining the effectiveness of counselling is the impact of the therapeutic relationship:
The relationship is therapy.

My name is Wendy Sutherst and I would like to take this opportunity to tell you a little bit about myself and what I can bring to your counselling sessions with me.
I have many years experience in clinical counselling practice and have worked in various sectors, including NHS GP surgeries, Employment Assistance Programmes, charitable agencies - Three years of which was working with women who had been sexually abused in childhood - and private practice.
I am also a supervisor and supervise several counsellors each month to ensure that they are working to BACP ethics and supporting them in their work with their own clients.
Whilst working as both a counsellor and a supervisor I have had experience of helping with a wide range of client problems, for example: stress, anxiety, emotional abuse, depression, relationship issues - including affairs/betrayal/separation and divorce, bereavement, post-natal depression, trauma, work-related stress and bullying and coping with change.
What I bring to counselling
I operate in strict confidence, always remaining impartial and non-judgemental, offering a relationship of mutual trust, empathy and challenge. The aim is to create a safe space in which you are able to off-load whatever it is that is preventing you from taking control of your life.
My core training is Person Centred, which underpins all the counselling work I undertake and is based on empathy, honesty and being non-judgemental, thus accepting each person as themselves.
I work on a range of issues on a face-to-face basis, either on a long term or short term basis. I do not insist on how many sessions you should have, but work with you to find solutions to your individual situation and that may be for one session only or a number of sessions taken on a weekly, fortnightly, monthly or on an as-and-when basis, whichever suits you.
By being an experienced, humanistic, integrative counsellor, I am able to allow your individual needs to inform the way we work together, introducing techniques or suggestions to help you to understand and find a solution to you situation. Therefore I work in a way that helps you to understand why you are struggling, paying attention to the way past relationships and events have impacted on your life, while finding practical ways of dealing with stress and situations at the time.
